If you live in an area that is prone to flooding then you need to ensure that you protect your home and your assets with Flood Barriers. Floods are very devastating events and can cause significant disruption if you are not prepared for them. This article will step through the available strategies you can use to minimize flood damage. The flood protection methods that will be discussed include sandbags, glass storefront barriers, automatic gates, levees, and hinged floodgates.
Sandbags. Sandbags are probably the image we first picture in our minds when it comes to flood protection. When large areas are affected and the water is not too deep, sandbags can keep the water out of a home or business and are relatively easy to access, although labor-intensive if many are needed. In case of emergencies, city or local authorities will publish where to find and fill sandbags. Once obtained, to get optimum results, you shouldn’t fill them more than half full and they should be stacked carefully, no more than three layers high. If the flood waters are expected to be more than two feet, sandbags will not provide good protection. Although there are kits available to allow a single individual to fill sandbags, it’s often more efficient to have several people working in a production line to fill and stack the bags where protection is needed.
Glass Storefront. Where flooding is common Glass Flood BarriersGlass Storefront Barriers are a great option for businesses large or small. These barriers are constructed to be flood and hurricane resistant and meet the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and FEMA’s requirements. Manufacturers of these products work closely with architects to determine the proper specifications and desired results. Although these require planning early on and incur some additional expense, the cost in the long run will be much less compared to flood damage of material items and the risk of injury or loss of life to those in the building.
Flood Gates. The third method would be using flood gates. Flood gates are not a fashionable solution, but a durable one. They are used to protect from the damage of violent flood waters. Flood gates can be used commercially and for the home, and are recommended for installment in front of a walkway/doorway. Flood gates are sturdy enough to hold up against strong winds and waters in order to protect possessions that may be on the other side. For an accurate estimate of the cost of a flood gate, it is best to call the contractor.
Levees. Levees are used to protect low-lying areas. A levee is essentially a wall of dirt and other earth matter that is built up along a low lying area to act as a barrier to a body of water such as a river or the ocean. Levees are good at protecting wide swaths of land and can be built with highly available materials. Levees do require a lot of work and money though as it takes a lot of hours and use of heavy machinery to build a large levee. Levees must also be maintained and this also costs quite a bit in terms of surveying and repair. If a levee falls into disrepair a false sense of security may be fostered and so people living behind the levee may not take proper precautions.
Hinged Flood Gates. Hinged flood gates are typically used to maintain water levels or flows in reservoirs, rivers or some levee systems; some cities even use them to protect major arteries in and out of town near large rivers. Hinged gates usually rely on hydraulic power although some use the water itself as in the case of automatic gates. Hinged flood gates can be flap gates, fish-belly flap gates or others. These gates can be closed (and opened only for exceptions) or kept open where flooding is rare and only closed when the threat is eminent.
In summary, many options are available for flood protection. Depending on the area where you live or work, for residential or commercial use, the best option will vary. Sandbags are obviously a quick and inexpensive option, whereas levees require much planning and effort, and glass barriers and automatic gates require consideration from the very beginning. All though are great protection from flooding if you know what you’re up against and have the thought and ability to implement the right choice.
