Most people think of the food storage like of something they would do if the whole world was under attack. Well, the whole world might be safe, but our world or our everyday life might be in danger and what we have used to do on daily basis could be interrupted.
We all know about the terrorist threat, but not a lot of people think of every day threats that are uncommon. We take many things we have for granted like full shelves in grocery stores, having gas and electricity whenever we need it. What would happen, if for whatever reason, we lose all these things? Just imagine your life without things of comfort and convenience we got used to so much. Nowadays, most of us cannot imagine our life without cell phone. Imagining our life without gas, light or food readily available in stores is even harder. The bare essentials of our life are food, water, protection and shelter and we are helpless without them. So, it would be logical for us to get prepared for the worst and create your emergency food and water storage.
Water is extremely important for emergency preparedness. Water is more important than food. You should store one gallon of drinking water to store for every person and one gallon of water for hygiene. Remember, that it is better to store too much than not enough. Make sure you store your water in food grade containers, such as new barrels that are approved by FDA. You can get those barrels in variety of sizes from 5 to 55 gallons. You can also utilize used barrels, which might work fine in many cases, but, unfortunately, what was stored in them before can leach in your water eventually.
As for the food, which you should store, it should be easy. You can use different approaches to preparing your food storage. You can either preserve your own food or buy food that has been specially prepared and packaged for food storage. The first option seems to be the harder one. You will have to grow it or prepare it, can it and then rotate it. Canned foods usually have shorter shelf life. But it might be a cheaper way to store your food, especially if you grow your own produce. Or, you can simply buy freeze dried foods that are already prepared for emergency food storage. Freeze dried foods have a much longer shelf life than most food items in your food storage. You can keep them for up to 25 years. And they also have all calories calculated. So, pretty much everything has already been done for you, all you have to do is buy them and store them. Freeze dried foods are a great option for your emergency food storage and you can also supplement it with other food items to add variety to your pantry.
