There are many different types of foam mattresses on the market these days. It began with experiments by NASA and quickly blossomed into a speciality market targeted to only those with higher incomes. But, like all technology, with time comes lower prices.
A memory mattress is made from a material called memory foam. It is a petroleum based product with some unique qualities. It has a very high level of viscosity, which causes it to have a much higher density, this is what causes it to hold imprints for a short amount of time when touched. A memory foam mattress is usually denser than an ordinary foam mattress. It is often seen as a good compromise between the comfort of a soft mattress and the supportiveness of a firm one.
Memory Mattress Hazards
While it is one of the most comfortable mattresses you will ever sleep on, a memory foam mattress does have it’s warnings. As with all petro-chemical based materials it has a higher combustion level than most other mattresses. To offset this threat, manufacturers use higher levels of fire retardant PBDE, which also causes concern for the health of people using a memory mattress. State and Federal Laws have been enacted in the USA to require all bedding materials, including memory foam items, be resistant to ignition from an open flame
